Top Lebanon banker: No gov’t lending for deficit coverage

The Lebanese Central Bank is not going to cover the country’s 2023 state budget deficit through government lending in the Lebanese lira or US dollar, affirmed the top banker on Friday.

“The (Lebanese) Central Bank does not intend to cover the country’s deficit through government lending, whether in Lebanese pounds or US dollars,” Acting Lebanese Central Bank Governor Wassim Mansouri said during a press conference.

However, he underlined that Lebanon’s monetary stability has been sustained via traditional monetary means, making it certain that the measures taken by the bank in this regard last month had not affected its foreign currency reserves.

Concerning civil servants’ wages for this month, the top banker confirmed that the public sector’s employees would be paid in US dollars at an exchange rate of 85,500 liras
