A study conducted by a team of researchers at Rutgers University in the United States has found a new way to manage the receptors that control the sense of touch, which may lead to an effective treatment for chronic pain.

The study revealed a natural molecule, called phosphatidic acid, that can reduce the activity of some ion channels that sense touch in the body.

The researchers found that increasing levels of phosphatidic acid in cells made them less sensitive to touch. The discovery was confirmed by experiments on sensory neurons and tests on mice, where the animals became more sensitive to touch when the formation of phosphatidic acid was inhibited.

Identifying a natural molecule that specifically reduces pain sensitivity offers hope for new therapeutic strategies in pain management, said Tibor Rohacs, professor in the Department of Pharmacology, Physiology and Neuroscience at Rutgers University School of Medicine. “Our goal is to translate the findings into effective treatments that improve the qualit
y of life for people with chronic pain,” he added.

BRAZILIA: Abu Dhabi Forum for Peace participated in the inaugural session of the G20 Interfaith Forum (IF20) held in Brasilia, Brazil, on August 19-22.

Gaza – Ma’an – The Qassam Brigades, the military wing of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), broadcast a new video that included testimonies of prisoners who had been appealing since the beginning of the war to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to release them by making deals with Hamas and ending the war. The second part of the clip showed these prisoners killed by bombs dropped by Israeli warplanes on the Gaza Strip in unprecedented bombing operations.

The video, titled “He promises them and gives them false hope, but the devil only promises them delusions,” showed one of the prisoners, named Alon Shamirz, saying, “I am very, very hopeful that I will soon be released from here.”

Tom Haim, a reserve soldier, said, ‘To my family… you are my life, I miss you until the end.’

While another said, “Benjamin Netanyahu and his government, you should be ashamed of yourselves.”

Another female prisoner appeared in the video addressing Netanyahu, saying, ‘Stop lying to our citizens and our families th
at you are doing everything you can so that we can return to our homes.’

An Israeli appeared in the Qassam video crying and appealing to Netanyahu, “Please return my wife and children so that they can be buried at home.”

Another prisoner asked Netanyahu to stop the war, saying, “Netanyahu, please stop the war and bring us home.”

Another expressed his hope, saying, “I really hope we get the best surprise possible.”

After the testimonies were shown, the Qassam video showed the prisoners as lifeless bodies.

At the end of the video, Netanyahu appears saying, ‘We have been working since the beginning of the war to bring the prisoners back home… to bring them all back… and when I say all of them, I mean all of them.’

ABU DHABI: The General Pension and Social Security Authority (GPSSA) has urged all government and private sector employers to visit its website and apply for awareness workshops designed to clarify the UAE’s federal pension laws No. 7 of 1999 and No. 57 of 2023.

These workshops aim to enhance participants’ understanding of the insurance and social security benefits provided by the GPSSA, offering long-term advantages to insured individuals, pensioners, and their families.

Until August 2024, GPSSA conducted 37 workshops, reaching 1,118 insured individuals, covering various aspects of pension law and its provisions.

The GPSSA offers two types of workshops: one focusing on the legal framework and the other on the electronic services linked to those laws. Employers can host these workshops at their premises, providing insured employees with insights into crucial insurance topics, including insurance percentages, contribution requirements, pension rules, and more.

Workshops also cover the process of paying con
tributions, including deadlines, and clarify leave and secondment periods, retirement pension eligibility, and end-of-service benefits. Attendees will learn about adding and purchasing service periods and merging pensions and salaries. A QandA session with GPSSA experts is included.

Employers can request workshops through the GPSSA website, where they can also access service guides, view service cards, and watch instructional videos. Once a request is submitted, the customer will be notified via email and SMS, and a GPSSA specialist will coordinate the delivery of the workshop, free of charge.
