UAE Team Emirates’ Pogacar crowned Giro D’Italia 2024 Champion


ROME: In an electrifying climax to an extraordinary edition of the Corsa Rosa, Tadej Pogacar was crowned champion of the Giro d’Italia 2024.

This victory marks a spectacular milestone, not only for the Pogacar but also for UAE Team Emirates, securing their first ever triumph in the prestigious Italian race.

Pogacar’s victory is particularly notable as he becomes the second consecutive Slovenian to win the Giro, following in the footsteps of Primoz Roglic.

Pogacar dominated the general classification, finishing a staggering 9 minutes and 56 seconds ahead of Daniel Martinez (Bora-hansgrohe) and 10 minutes and 24 seconds ahead of Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers).

Ministry of Sports and Youth Launches Qatar’s Youth Delegate to UN Program


Doha: May 26 – The Ministry of Sports and Youth, represented by the Youth Affairs Department, launched on Sunday Qatar’s Youth Delegate to the United Nations training program, held at the United Nations House in Doha and runs until May 30.

Twenty Four Qatari young men and women from the ministry’s strategic programs are participating in the program, which seeks to prepare a group of Qatari youth to represent the State of Qatar at the United Nations meetings to take place in various countries from June-December 2024.

Director of the Youth Affairs Department at the Ministry of Sports and Youth Fawaz Al Mesaifri told Qatar News Agency that this program is a realization of the ministry’s vision of a proactive, responsible, and patriotic youth, and a sports-oriented society capable of contributing actively to Qatar’s development on all levels, supporting the Qatar National Vision 2030, and ensuring a qualified workforce to serve the national vision’s goals and aspirations.

Al Mesaifri said that the training wil
l focus on familiarizing participants with the Sustainable Development Goals, diplomatic negotiation, United Nations principles, and work mechanisms, enhancing their knowledge of international organizations, as well as Qatar’s foreign policy’s take on a number of international issues.

The Director of the Youth Affairs Department at the Ministry of Sports and Youth noted that those participating in the program are among Qatar’s youth elite, being prepared for future engagements on the world stage, especially those related to the United Nations.

Regarding the selection process of program beneficiaries, Al Mesaifri explained that the selection pool included participants from the ministry’s various programs, with candidates being selected based on their performance in an interview, their English language proficiency, and their familiarity with international organizations, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and Qatar’s role in achieving SDGs.

He added that upon the completion of the intensive week program, a
team from the ministry will hold a progress evaluation session for participants to address any shortcomings.

In a similar statement to QNA, Director of the Qatar youth delegate to the United Nations program, Rashid Al Naimi, said that it is being conducted with the participation of governmental and international partners such as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the National Planning Council, Hamad Bin Khalifa University, Educate A Child, and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

Program beneficiary Sheikh Mohammed bin Thamer Al-Thani told QNA that the program is full of various courses and workshops, the most important of which are negotiation skills and the State of Qatar’s foreign policy. He added that studying International Affairs at QU provides him with an opportunity to translate theory into practice through practicing negotiation skills and representing Qatar in international forums.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Thamer Al-Thani affirmed that the program meets his ambitions, as it provides one with a s
ufficiently wide range of knowledge and skills.

Qatar University student and program beneficiary, Amna Mohammed Al Dahneem, said that she had joined the program out of her aspiration to be part of the Qatar National Vision 2030, channeling all of her energy and capabilities into representing the State of Qatar on the international stage in the best way possible. Al Dahneem pointed out that she is specializing in Early Childhood Education, a field in which she would like to represent her country.

Akram Afif to QNA: Winning Best Player, Top Scorer Awards Was Result of Collective Effort


Doha: May 26 – Al Sadd player Akram Afif expressed his happiness at winning both the Top Scorer and Best Player awards for the 2023-2024 season at the Qatar Football Association Awards ceremony held Sunday at the Qatar National Convention Centre.

In a press statement to QNA, Afif said that winning these two awards was a result of the collective effort from both Al Sadd and the Qatari national team. He described the current season as exceptional and challenging, highlighted by the national team’s victory in the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023 for the second consecutive time, as well as Al Sadd securing the league title and the 2024 HH the Amir Cup.

Afif praised the efforts of his teammates in the national team, acknowledging their role in securing the continental title. He emphasized that his primary focus is contributing to winning titles with both the national team and his club, rather than seeking individual awards, which are a result of collective teamwork.

He also highlighted the significant roles of the tech
nical, administrative, and medical staff in achieving a player’s high performance.

Afif stated that he always aims to deliver his best performance and strives to maintain his high level of play to help achieve more championships. He noted that winning the AFC Asian Cup 2023 with the national team would serve as a significant motivation for the future. He expressed his ambition to contribute to qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be his main goal in the coming period.

Akram Afif also expressed his delight at winning the Expo Stars League with Al Sadd and ending the season with the 2024 HH the Amir Cup. He hoped that the team would perform even better in the next season, especially in the AFC Champions League, which will be their primary goal as players.

Al Gharafa Coach to QNA: Best Coach Award Serves as Motivation for Next Season


Doha: May 26 – Al Gharafa coach, Pedro Martins, expressed his happiness for receiving the Best Coach Award in the Qatar Football Association (QFA) Awards Ceremony for the 2023-2024 season, held at the Qatar National Convention Center (QNCC) on Sunday, adding that this award serves as a great motivation for him and the team in the upcoming season.

Martins told Qatar News Agency that this award is the fruit of the entire club’s tremendous efforts during this tough season, which saw Al Gharafa advance significantly and present an outstanding performance, in which they competed for the league’s title, reaching the semi-finals in both the Qatar and HH the Amir Cups.

The Portuguese coach explained that Al Gharafa faced many challenges this season, having aspired to win the league and indeed managing to lead the standings at times, however, the team stumbled and lost some points in the final rounds, giving Al Sadd the opportunity to clinch the title. Martins affirmed that the difference was minimal between the com
peting teams, namely Al Sadd, Al Rayyan, Al Gharafa, and Al Wakrah.

Al Gharafa’s coach concluded his statement by thanking the Qatar Football Association and the Qatar Stars League for their great efforts during the season, wishing everyone success in the future.

Kuwait Club, Shahrdary Gorgan Reach Semi-Finals of FIBA WASL Final 8


Doha: May 26 – Kuwait Club and Iranian Shahrdary Gorgan reached the Semi-Finals of the FIBA West Asia Super League (WASL) Final 8 for the sport season 2023-2024, which hosted by Doha for the first time at the Lusail Sports Hall.

Kuwait Club and Iranian Shahrdary Gorgan qualified after beating Kuwaiti Kazma and Indian Tamil Nadu teams respectively.

In the first match, Kuwait Club defeated its compatriot Kazma 99-95, with a difference of only 4 points, after playing two additional times. It was a strong match for both teams.

The original four periods of the match ended in a 70-70 draw (18-21, 19-13, 15-21, 18-15). The two teams tied in the first extra time 14-14 but Kuwait Club decided the match and won it in the second extra time 15-11.

In the second match, the Iranian Shahrdary Gorgan team scored a 104-91 major victory over the Indian Tamil Nadu team with a difference of 13 points.

The four periods of the match were (29-20, 23-17, 29-22, 23-32) for Shahrdary Gorgan.

Egyptian Tarek Momen Wins Qatar International Squash Championship Title


Doha: Egyptian player Tarek Momen was crowned champion of the 3rd edition of the Qatar International Men’s Squash Championship, which was hosted by the Qatar Tennis, Squash, Padel, and Badminton Federation on its courts with the participation of 24 international players.

Momen achieved victory in the final match over his Malaysian counterpart, Eain Yow Ng, by three games to one game, 11-6, 11-4, 5-11, and 11-5.

The title is the Egyptian player’s tenth on the PSA World Tour and the first since the Windsor Cup last August.

Momen qualified for the final after narrowly defeating Qatari national team player Abdullah Al Tamimi in the semi-finals in three games 22-10, 11-6, and 12-10.

Tareq Zainal, Secretary General of the Qatar Tennis, Squash, Padel, and Badminton Federation, congratulated the player Tarek Momen, praising his performance during the final match alongside his Malaysian competitor.

In a press statement, Zainal said that the tournament witnessed very strong and competitive performances, with the p
articipation of a group of the most prominent international players, who were keen to be present in the Doha tournaments.

KAFD Globe Soccer Awards Europe reveals official shortlist for Best Men’s Player


SARDINIA: The inaugural KAFD Globe Soccer Awards – Europe edition announced the finalists for the Best Men’s Player, following an intense six-day public vote.

Under the umbrella of ‘Road to Dubai’ and organised in partnership with Dubai Sports Council, select winners from the European edition will be shortlisted for the year-ending Dubai Globe Soccer Awards global event in the UAE.

The ceremony will be held tomorrow, Tuesday, at Hotel Cala di Volpe in Costa Smeralda, Sardinia, with the participation of a group of the most prominent European football stars to celebrate the continental expansion of the annual Dubai Globe Soccer Awards.

The Best Men’s Player shortlist includes 12 stars, led by Real Madrid’s Champions League finalists Jude Bellingham and Vinicius Jr, French superstar Kylian Mbappe, Liverpool icon Mohamed Salah, and a quartet of Manchester City players.

Ahead of the first KAFD Globe Soccer Awards Europe, which will also include the first, in-person, end-of-season LALIGA Awards, a star-studded
jury made up of ex-players, former and active coaches, club presidents and CEOs, referees, agents, and other football stakeholders will decide the final winners from official shortlists generated by an international fan-led voting process.

Liverpool’s Salah led the public vote and is joined by, among others, Manchester City’s Phil Foden, Erling Haaland, Rodri, and Bernardo Silva. Other contenders include Harry Kane, Mbappe and his international teammate Antoine Griezmann, VFB Stuttgart’s prolific forward Serhou Guirassy, Inter Milan star Lautaro Martinez, and Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr and Bellingham – the latter of whom is also nominated for the Emerging Player award.

Ten clubs from six of Europe’s top leagues are vying for Best Men’s Club, with Real Madrid leading the fan vote. Fellow LALIGA sides Barcelona and Girona, undefeated Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen, Europa League winners Atalanta, Serie A champions Inter Milan, and English duo Arsenal and Manchester City, as well PSG and Sporting, compri

The coaches of all but one of the 10 teams shortlisted for Best Men’s Club are also in the running for Best Coach.

UAE Football Association signs MoU with Cybersecurity Council

ABU DHABI: The UAE Football Association today signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the UAE government’s Cybersecurity Council here.

The MoU aims to enhance cooperation through the exchange of expertise in cyber fields related to information and communication technology, and to focus on cooperation, deterrence and prevention of cyberattacks, in addition to participating in promoting awareness, educational and scientific research and development programmes.

The signing ceremony took place on the sidelines of the 8th International Exhibition for National Security and Resilience (ISNR Abu Dhabi 2024) in the presence of Mohammed Abdullah Hazam Al Dhaheri, Secretary General of the UAE Football Association, and Dr. Mohammed Hamad Al Kuwaiti, Chairman of the UAE government’s Cybersecurity Council.

Under the MoU, the two sides will also share information on security risks and malware and solutions to deter them.
