Abu Dhabi Successfully Completes Drone Parcel Delivery Trial

Abu dhabi: In collaboration with LODD Autonomous, the Integrated Transport Centre (ITC), an affiliate of the Department of Municipalities and Transport, announced the successful completion of a trial for parcel delivery using unmanned aerial vehicles in Abu Dhabi. During this trial, a drone with a robotic arm transported a parcel from Al Samha to KIZAD, utilizing an advanced navigation system for accurate and efficient delivery operations.

According to Emirates News Agency, the trial is part of the Smart and Autonomous Systems Council's strategy to position Abu Dhabi as a leading hub for smart mobility. This initiative aligns with ITC's efforts to adopt advanced transport systems designed to enhance service efficiency, support sustainable infrastructure, and improve the quality of life across the emirate. ITC regulates drone operations through the Unified National Platform for Unmanned Aircraft Systems, ensuring faster approvals and adherence to laws, safety standards, privacy, and airspace protection.

LODD Autonomous also showcased updates on its hybrid autonomous aircraft development program, 'Hili' (VTOL), which is engineered for heavy air cargo. This aircraft can transport loads of up to 250 kilograms over distances of 300 kilometers, utilizing a system that combines electric motors with an internal combustion engine. Its vertical take-off and landing capability allows it to operate without conventional infrastructure like airports.

The 'Hili' is anticipated to make significant advancements in medium-range air cargo by linking logistics hubs, enhancing supply chain efficiency, and supporting the logistics sector's growth in the region. Dr. Abdulla Hamad AlGhfeli, Acting Director-General of ITC, emphasized Abu Dhabi's commitment to adopting the latest innovations in transport and logistics to improve service quality and build a smart and sustainable transport ecosystem.

Rashed Matar Al Manai, CEO of LODD Autonomous, highlighted that the drone-based delivery system enhances the efficiency and speed of transport and distribution services, addressing supply chain needs in the face of rapid e-commerce growth and the demand for faster solutions. Drone deliveries can be completed within hours, compared to the several days required by traditional methods.
