ADNOC Achieves Milestone with Five Million Mangroves Planted in Abu Dhabi

Abu dhabi: Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and ADNOC Managing Director and Group CEO, has planted ADNOC's five millionth mangrove seedling during a visit to the Al Nouf mangrove forest in Abu Dhabi. This event marks a significant milestone in ADNOC's initiative to plant 10 million mangroves by 2030.

According to Emirates News Agency, ADNOC has now surpassed the halfway mark toward its ambitious goal, advancing its commitment to protect biodiversity through scalable, nature-based solutions. This initiative supports the UAE's broader aim to plant 100 million mangroves by 2030, contributing to long-term value and positive impact for the nation. Dr. Al Jaber emphasized that environmental stewardship is central to ADNOC's strategy, underpinning their commitment to sustainable value creation for the UAE and its communities.

ADNOC's mangrove planting program, initiated in 2023, employs advanced artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled drone technology developed in the UAE to efficiently plant mangroves on a large scale. The program also incorporates advanced monitoring tools, such as machine learning, to track the health, growth, and restoration success of the mangroves over time.

Community engagement plays a crucial role in the mangrove planting initiative. In 2025 alone, over 1,000 volunteers participated in planting activities, dedicating thousands of hours to conservation efforts. Since the program's inception, approximately 6,000 individuals have been involved in mangrove planting, coastal clean-ups, and biodiversity restoration initiatives in Abu Dhabi. Participants have included youth volunteers from schools, community groups, People of Determination, and ADNOC employees, all actively contributing to the program's success.

In 2024, ADNOC joined forces with the Abu Dhabi Mangrove Initiative, led by the Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD), to accelerate mangrove restoration, advance research, and encourage private sector and community involvement. These efforts align with the UAE's Plant the Emirates Program and the World Economic Forum's One Trillion Trees Initiative.
