Al Jalila Foundation Supports 60 Organ Transplant Patients Amid Growing Demand

Dubai: Al Jalila Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Dubai Health, has made a significant impact by supporting organ transplant surgeries for 60 patients, marking a crucial development in the first and second editions of the 'Your Donation Saves Lives' campaign. This initiative underscores the Foundation's dedication to aiding patients with organ failure and promoting organ donation as a humanitarian value.

According to Emirates News Agency, the announcement comes in conjunction with World Organ Donation Day, celebrated annually on 13th August. Since the campaign's inception in April 2021, it has facilitated 60 transplant procedures, comprising 53 kidney transplants and 7 liver transplants. Notably, these include 24 children with kidney failure and 5 children with liver failure. The Foundation continues to extend its support to over 65 patients requiring life-saving transplants, who lack access to or cannot afford specialized care.

These efforts align with the objectives of HAYAT, the National Programme for Organ and Tissue Donation and Transplantation, and are executed in collaboration with Dubai Health's integrated academic health system. Dr. Amer Al Zarooni, CEO of Al Jalila Foundation, announced that the 'Your Donation Saves Lives' campaign has now become a permanent fixture under the Foundation's A'awen programme. This initiative provides financial assistance for critical medical treatment across the UAE, reflecting Dubai Health's 'Patient First' commitment.

On World Organ Donation Day, Dr. Al Zarooni emphasized the Foundation's pledge to support organ failure patients and expressed gratitude to the generous donors who contributed to the campaign's success. He highlighted that their support funded nearly 30% of all organ transplants performed in Dubai during the first edition alone.

Dr. Ashraf Al Hinnawi, Consultant Transplant Surgeon at Dubai Health, elaborated on the meticulous evaluation process for both donors and recipients. The medical team ensures high success rates by conducting comprehensive assessments, including kidney function and immune compatibility checks, along with necessary medical and surgical evaluations. Post-transplant, patients are regularly monitored to ensure adherence to treatment plans.

For living donors, Dr. Al Hinnawi noted that evaluations include functional testing and screenings for infectious or cancerous conditions, alongside psychological and social assessments. All cases are reviewed by a multidisciplinary medical committee to ensure donor eligibility and safety for both the donor and recipient.
