Mogadishu: Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, expressed strong support for Somalia's efforts to conduct its first direct municipal elections since 1969. He highlighted this initiative as a pivotal move towards enhancing citizenship, establishing constitutional legitimacy, and promoting civil peace and development.
According to Emirates News Agency, Aboul Gheit released a statement urging Somali political factions to emphasize dialogue and national consensus. He called for a unified approach to tackle the country's security and political challenges, including terrorism and advancing state-building processes.
Gamal Roshdy, the Spokesman for the Secretary-General, emphasized that the League of Arab States is monitoring the electoral process in Mogadishu closely. He noted that the transition to a direct universal suffrage system marks a significant shift from the indirect electoral system used since 1969, aligning with Somalia's provisional constitution's principle of one person, one vote.
The League of Arab States has also reiterated its commitment to providing necessary political and technical support in collaboration with Somali state institutions. This support aims to fulfill the Somali people's aspirations for security, stability, prosperity, and the restoration of their national state's role.
