Austria has reduced its carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by approximately 350,000 tonnes during the first half of this year, with the majority of the decrease stemming from reduced vehicle and transport use. Fuel consumption has also dropped by around 140 million litres during the same period. According to data from the Environment Agency Austria, petrol consumption increased by about 2 percent in the first half of the year, while diesel consumption decreased by less than 5 percent. Overall fuel consumption for both types of fuel decreased by around 140 million litres, totalling 4.18 billion litres, compared to the same period in 2023. Michael Schwendinger, a mobility expert, predicted a continued decline in greenhouse gas emissions from transport for the third consecutive year. He forecasted that CO2 emissions from traffic would drop to less than 19 million tonnes by the end of 2024, compared to approximately 19.8 million tonnes in 2023, 20.6 million tonnes in 2022, and 21.6 million tonnes in 2021.
