Baghdad calls on Security Council to maintain security

Iraq sent on Wednesday a call to the UN Security Council to carry out its responsibilities and tasks to maintain international peace and security, against the backdrop of Israel's assassination of the head of the political bureau of Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh, in the Iranian capital, Tehran. Iraqi government spokesman Bassem Al-Awadi said in a statement that the Zionist entity has violated the sovereignty of countries and flouted international laws by committing assassination crimes, targeting a political figure, and seeking to ignite crises and expand conflicts that will inevitably lead to dangerous repercussions in the region. He pointed out that the Iraqi government repeated its warnings against the consequences of this aggressive behavior and called on more than one occasion for a firm international stance by international institutions, organizations, UN bodies and major countries alike to deter the Zionist transgressions that tamper with the stability of the region and the security of its peoples and spread the causes of tension, in addition to the entity's continued launch of The genocidal war against the Palestinian people. Earlier today, the Iraqi Foreign Ministry described the assassination of Haniyeh as an aggressive operation, and said that it constitutes a blatant violation of international laws and a threat to security and stability in the region, calling on the international community to assume its responsibilities and take the necessary measures to stop the repeated attacks and the end of the sovereignty of states.
