Biodiversity Finance Sees Significant Growth, Reaching Up to USD 92.4 Billion

Yerevan:A new report by the OECD titled "An Overview of Global Biodiversity Finance" has highlighted an increase in biodiversity finance from both public and private sources. The report estimates that global biodiversity finance reached between USD 74.9 billion and USD 92.4 billion annually from 2023 to 2025.

According to Emirates News Agency, Public domestic expenditure accounts for the majority of this finance, estimated at USD 46.0-63.5 billion per year during the same period. Public international finance, which includes bilateral and multilateral official development assistance, contributed an average of USD 16.1 billion annually, while private domestic and international finance added USD 12.9 billion.

The report indicates a notable growth in biodiversity finance, with public domestic expenditure rising by 16% between 2018-2020 and 2023-2024 across 63 countries. International public finance saw a 94% increase, and private investment grew by 73% over these periods.

Efforts to reverse biodiversity loss will require extensive mobilization of finance. Enhancing the tracking and reporting of biodiversity finance is essential to understanding financing trends and supporting these efforts. The report suggests improving the consistency, international comparability, coverage, and transparency of biodiversity finance data.

These findings are being released as nations prepare for the 17th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP17), scheduled to take place in Yerevan, Armenia, from 19 to 30 October 2026.
