Bodour Al Qasimi Becomes First Woman from GCC to Win BolognaRagazzi Award

Bologna: Emirati publisher, author, and women's advocate Bodour Al Qasimi has made history by becoming the first woman from an Arab Gulf state to receive a prestigious BolognaRagazzi Award for Fiction. Sheikha Bodour Al Qasimi received the prize for her children's book 'House of Wisdom' at a ceremony in the Farnese Chapel, at Palazzo d'Accursio, in Bologna.

According to Emirates News Agency, Sheikha Bodour expressed that the award represents a shift towards a more inclusive children's publishing sector. Amid global tensions, she believes that stories like 'House of Wisdom' carry a message that books can occasion unity, progress, and a deeper understanding between cultures. She emphasized literature's power to build bridges and maintain a broader perspective on humanity.

Sheikha Bodour further explained that 'The House of Wisdom' was a library symbolizing the collaboration across cultures to build strong connections. Its destruction in 1258 serves as a reminder of the fragility of intellectual freedom, a lesson still relevant today.

The book has been celebrated for its approach in promoting critical thought, scientific curiosity, and compassion, highlighting the international recognition of Middle Eastern children's literature value. Illustrated by Majid Zakeri Younesi, the book's art complements the story effectively.

Majid Zakeri Younesi, unable to attend the ceremony, remarked on the unique opportunity to depict the spirit of curiosity and innovation through his illustrations, aligning with Sheikha Bodour's narrative.

Following the award ceremony, Sheikha Bodour participated in a panel with other BolognaRagazzi Award winners and attended a reception at the Kalimat Group stand. She shared her inspiration behind 'House of Wisdom,' emphasizing the importance of preserving cultural and intellectual legacies and the role of storytelling in bridging cultural divides.

Prior to the award event, Sheikha Bodour signed copies of her book at the Giannino Stoppani Children's Bookshop, which she helped restore after a fire in 2022. She supported the renovation with significant funds from the Sharjah World Book Capital Office.
