Antalya:COP31 aims to transform the commitments from previous conferences into tangible outcomes, as stated by COP31 President-Designate, Murat Kurum, ahead of the upcoming UN climate conference in Antalya, Turkey.
According to Wam, Kurum emphasized the urgency of addressing climate change, noting that record-breaking temperatures are causing devastation at a quicker and more intense rate than anticipated. He highlighted the importance of maintaining the 1.5-degree target as a guiding principle and called for action to address the realities of climate overshoot. Kurum pointed out the necessity of financial mobilization, with a commitment made in Baku to raise at least $300 billion annually by 2035 for developing countries, urging developed nations to lead in fulfilling existing targets.
Kurum further elaborated on COP31's focus on advancing electrification to counter energy dependency issues exposed by the recent energy crisis. He stressed that electrification could shield communities from global market fluctuations and reduce emissions. Additionally, the agenda includes promoting zero waste initiatives, with a particular emphasis on cutting methane emissions from waste as a rapid method to mitigate warming. Kurum also underscored the need to enhance resilience, enabling cities and coastal communities to better withstand increasing temperatures and sea levels.
