Council of Europe Urges Halt to Arms Transfers Amid Gaza Conflict

Brussels: The Council of Europe's Commissioner for Human Rights, Michael O'Flaherty, has called on member states to cease arms transfers that might contribute to human rights violations in the Gaza Strip. O'Flaherty's call to action comes amidst escalating conflict in the region.

According to Emirates News Agency, O'Flaherty emphasized the severe impact of the ongoing conflict in Gaza, describing it as a situation causing immense human suffering. In a statement, he highlighted his engagement with member states concerning their responsibilities under international arms trade regulations, urging them to ensure their actions do not exacerbate human rights violations.

O'Flaherty acknowledged measures taken by some countries, such as Germany, which have suspended or restricted arms transfers to Israel. He praised the efforts of national human rights organizations in promoting awareness and urging governments to fulfill their obligations. However, he stressed that further action is necessary and must be taken swiftly.

Additionally, the commissioner called for increased efforts to secure unhindered humanitarian access and advocated for the immediate release of hostages. O'Flaherty reaffirmed his commitment to working with member states to foster a response to the Gaza conflict that aligns with human rights principles.
