Early Presidential Vote Begins in Uzbekistan

Polling centers in Uzbekistan opened Sunday to voters to cast their votes in the early presidential elections taking place in the country. The polling centers will close at 8:00 PM local time.

Four candidates are competing in the elections, including a female candidate. Incumbent President Shavkat Mirziyoyev represents the Liberal Democratic Party. The other candidates are Ulugbek Inoyatov from the People's Democratic Party of Uzbekistan, Robakhon Mahmudova from the Social-Democratic party of Adolat (Justice) and Abdushukur Khamzaev from the Ecological Party of Uzbekistan.

Early voting began for voters outside of polling centers on June 28.

Voters in Uzbekistan approved a package of constitutional amendments in a referendum held on April 30. These amendments allowed for President Mirziyoyev to run for two additional terms, each lasting seven years.

Mirziyoyev assumed office in the 2016 elections, succeeding his predecessor Islam Karimov, and was re-elected in 2021.
