Indian police said on Saturday that eight people, including three women, were killed and several others were injured in an explosion at a firecracker factory in Krishnagiri district of southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu.
The Press Trust of India said quoting the police that the sudden explosion in firecracker manufacturing godown in Pazhayapettai in Krishnagiri district killed eight people and left many injured.
The explosion also damaged nearby houses and shops.
Personnel from the police, and fire and rescue services rushed to the incident site.
The injured were taken to a nearby hospital and authorities gave instructions to give all necessary medical support to the affected.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin condoled the death of people in the incident and promised compensation to the injured and families of the dead. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his condolences.
"Deeply saddened by the tragic mishap at a cracker factory in Krishnagiri, Tamil Nadu, resulting in the loss of precious lives. My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims during this extremely difficult time.
May the injured recover soon," Modi said.
