Emirates Drug Establishment Approves Foundayo for Type 2 Diabetes Treatment

Dubai:The Emirates Drug Establishment (EDE) has announced its approval of a new therapeutic indication for Foundayo (orforglipron), a medication developed by Eli Lilly, for the treatment of adults with type 2 diabetes. This makes the United Arab Emirates the third country globally to approve this medication for such use. Previously, EDE had approved Foundayo for weight management in April.

According to Wam, this approval aligns with EDE's strategic objectives to create an advanced pharmaceutical regulatory system characterized by efficiency and regulatory excellence. The system is committed to adhering to the highest international standards of quality, safety, and efficacy.

The initiative aims to increase access to innovative treatments, broaden treatment options, and enhance the management of chronic diseases, ultimately reducing their burden on the community. Additionally, it underscores the UAE's leadership and global competitiveness in the pharmaceutical sector.

Foundayo is an oral, non-peptide glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist that is taken once daily without any food or water restrictions. It aids in controlling blood glucose levels in adults with type 2 diabetes and supports long-term weight management when used alongside a physician-supervised treatment plan that includes diet and physical activity.

EDE has highlighted the importance of understanding the risk factors for type 2 diabetes, undergoing regular screenings for early detection, and maintaining continuous medical follow-up to manage the condition effectively and minimize the risk of complications.
