Emirates Literature Foundation and MBRSC Launch Sci-Fi Short Story Award for UAE Youth

Dubai: The Emirates Literature Foundation, in collaboration with the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre, has announced the launch of the MBRSC Short Story Award: New Voices in Sci-Fi. The initiative aims to inspire a new generation of science fiction writers within the UAE, offering a platform for emerging talents to showcase their creativity.

According to Emirates News Agency, the award is open to participants aged 16 to 30, inviting original short story submissions in English or Arabic, with word counts between 1,500 and 5,000. The submission deadline is set for 16th November 2025. The award was unveiled at a press conference during the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature 2025, attended by key figures including Dr. Sultan AlNeyadi, Minister of State for Youth Affairs; Salem AlMarri, Director-General of the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre; Isobel Abulhoul OBE, Founder and Trustee of the Emirates Literature Foundation and Trustee of the Mohammed Bin Rashid Library; and Ahlam Bolooki, CEO of the Emirates Literature Foundation.

The submitted stories will be assessed by a distinguished panel of judges, including a renowned science fiction author. The evaluation criteria include originality, creativity, scientific accuracy, narrative strength, character development, and overall literary merit. Winners will be announced at the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature 2026 and will receive a commemorative plaque. They will also have the opportunity to participate in exclusive creative writing workshops, attend Festival sessions, and have their winning entries published in an anthology to be launched at the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature 2027.

Dr. Sultan AlNeyadi emphasized the importance of science fiction in inspiring humanity to explore possibilities beyond the impossible. He expressed hope that the award would encourage young writers to imagine the future and inspire real-world advancements in space exploration and technology. Salem AlMarri highlighted the award's role in empowering young creators and thinkers to shape a future rooted in innovation and scientific advancement in space exploration.

Isobel Abulhoul noted that the collaboration with the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre offers a unique opportunity for young people in the UAE to engage with science fiction. She expressed optimism that the initiative would serve as a springboard for emerging literary talent and inspire a deeper appreciation for science, technology, and innovation. Ahlam Bolooki added that the award underscores the region's rich traditions in science and mathematics, offering authors a chance to lead the way in the sci-fi genre and inspire future generations.
