Etihad Rail to Complete Solar-Powered Ghuwaifat Freight Terminal by End of 2025

Abu dhabi: Etihad Rail is set to complete the solar-powered Ghuwaifat freight terminal by the end of 2025, marking it as the first solar-powered project within the Etihad Rail network. The initiative will extend clean energy to other stations in the following phase, according to Adhraa Almansoori, Director of Public Policy and Sustainability at Etihad Rail.

According to Emirates News Agency, Almansoori made these remarks during the opening of the second edition of the Global Rail 2025 exhibition and conference for railways, transport, and infrastructure in Abu Dhabi. She highlighted the sustainability of railways as a mode of transportation, aligning with the UAE's goal for climate neutrality and best sustainability practices.

She also mentioned that by 2050, Etihad Rail aims to reduce land transport sector emissions by up to 21%, which is equivalent to about 8.2 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions. Since the previous year, the company has issued certificates to customers to confirm reductions in carbon emissions achieved by switching to rail transport. Some customers have managed to cut their emissions by as much as 70%.

The Ghuweifat freight terminal, located strategically at the border with Saudi Arabia, serves as a critical hub for cross-border operations. It is expected to promote sustainable logistics solutions regionally, in line with Etihad Rail's objectives for eco-friendly freight operations.

By integrating solar technology, the Ghuweifat terminal will become self-sufficient, using renewable energy to operate sustainably and reduce its carbon footprint. This move sets a new benchmark for efficient and environmentally-friendly logistics and infrastructure.
