Brussels: European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced on Wednesday that the EU-developed age verification application for digital platforms is technically ready and will be launched soon to limit children's access to social media.
According to Emirates News Agency, von der Leyen, during a press conference in Brussels with European Commission Executive Vice-President Henna Virkkunen, emphasized the EU's commitment to enforcing digital rules and holding platforms accountable. She highlighted that the new tool would empower parents, teachers, and caregivers with resources to protect children and affirmed that the EU would not tolerate companies that disregard children's rights.
Virkkunen added that the EU plans to establish a coordination mechanism to ensure the age verification system is compatible across different national systems, as member states increase oversight of minors' digital platform use. This initiative is part of the EU's broader strategy to enhance online child protection and enforce stricter regulations on major technology companies.
