Brussels: The European Commission has announced the establishment of the Security Action for Europe (SAFE) Special Group, created in accordance with Council Regulation (EU) 2025/1106. The Special Group is set to play a central role in supporting the implementation of SAFE, with its members nominated by the national authorities of their Member States. These members, known as Special Group Representatives (SGRs), will offer expert guidance and strategic coordination to help deliver SAFE's objectives and maximise its impact across the Union.
According to Emirates News Agency, the formation of the SAFE Special Group signifies a key milestone in enhancing collective security cooperation within the Union. This special group has been tasked with sharing an overview of the progress that Member States make in implementing SAFE. As it is the first instance of the Commission issuing loans for defence products and other related purposes, the group will also address any questions from Member States and inform their relevant national authorities in an appropriate and timely manner.
The support provided by the group will include procedural updates, explanation of templates and supporting documents, coordination of the loan amount and agreement process, and provision of necessary updates and clarifications. The inaugural SAFE Special Group Meeting is scheduled for September 2025, with a minimum of two meetings expected to take place each year.
