EU’s New Biometric Border Checks to Start on October 12

Brussels: The Entry/Exit System (EES) is set to commence on October 12, 2025, requiring non-EU citizens to register their personal details, including fingerprints and facial images, upon their initial entry into the Schengen area. This area includes all EU nations except Ireland and Cyprus, along with Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein.

According to Emirates News Agency, the data collection process will be gradually introduced at border crossings, with full implementation expected by April 10, 2026. This phased approach aims to ensure that there are no significant delays or long queues at the borders. The new electronic system will eliminate the need for manually stamping passports at the EU's external borders, instead creating digital records that link travel documents to individuals' identities using biometric data.

The EU's objective with this new system is to modernize the management of its external borders, prevent illegal migration, combat identity fraud, and identify individuals who overstay. It will monitor compliance with the rule allowing visa-free travelers to stay in the bloc for up to 90 days within any 180-day period.

Upon first arrival in the Schengen area, travelers will be required to scan their passports, register their fingerprints, and provide a facial scan. When departing, their details will be checked against the EES database to confirm adherence to time limits and register their departure. For subsequent journeys, only facial biometric verification will be necessary. Children under the age of 12 will need to be registered in the EES system, but only a photograph will be required for them.
