FANR and Dubai Police Collaborate with IAEA for Technical Meeting in Dubai.


Dubai: The Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) and Dubai Police are currently hosting a significant technical meeting in collaboration with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The event, titled “Technical Meeting on Lessons Learned from 20 Years of IAEA Support to Major Public Events,” is taking place in Dubai from 4 to 7 November 2024.

According to Emirates News Agency, the gathering has attracted over 150 participants from 70 IAEA Member States, focusing on exchanging information and expertise in planning, developing, and implementing nuclear security systems and measures for major public events. The workshop is designed to highlight strategies for preventing, detecting, and responding to nuclear security incidents involving nuclear or other radioactive materials during such events.

Major General Abdullah Ali Al Ghaithi, Assistant Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police for Operations, delivered the opening address, welcoming participants and emphasising the meeting’s value as a platform
for knowledge exchange with specialists and experts from the IAEA. He encouraged attendees to leverage the discussions and insights to better understand future challenges in the nuclear energy sector and expressed gratitude to the UAE’s FANR for its role in sharing knowledge and experiences.

Christer Viktorsson, Director-General of FANR, highlighted the importance of the Technical Meeting as an opportunity to discuss and showcase nuclear security arrangements at major public events. Viktorsson noted that the workshop allows participants to address challenges, share experiences, and discuss solutions related to nuclear security measures. He also mentioned the significance of this year marking 20 years of IAEA’s support in ensuring nuclear security during major sports events and international conferences, with UAE case studies like Dubai Expo 2020 and COP28 serving as examples of coordinated efforts to ensure public safety at high-profile events.
