Izmir: Firefighters in Trkiye have contained six of nine wildfires tearing across western Izmir province, officials said on Friday, after the blazes killed two people and forced thousands to evacuate their homes earlier in the week.
According to Emirates News Agency, strong winds and faulty power lines have fuelled the flames, creating challenging conditions for firefighting teams. Forestry Minister Ibrahim Yumakli announced on X that the fire in Cesme has been brought under control due to the intense efforts of forest teams and aerial interventions.
Efforts are ongoing to control the fires in Odemis and Buca, with the minister highlighting the continued dedication of air and land teams. Izmir Governor Suleyman Elban noted the main challenge in combating the fires is the unpredictable and shifting winds, which constantly change direction.
Governor Elban reported that nine planes, 22 helicopters, and 1,100 vehicles are actively engaged in battling the fires across the region, illustrating the scale of the response required to tackle the blazes.
