The French government on Wednesday condemned the military coup currently taking place in Gabon, underlining that it is monitoring the events with great attention.
French Government Spokesman Olivier Veran told reporters at the end of the weekly cabinet meeting at the Elysee Palace that his country reiterates respect for the election results and condemns the military coup currently taking place in Gabon.
In a related context, France urged its citizens in Gabon to stay at home, after the military coup following President Ali Bongo Ondimba's victory for a third term.
The French Embassy in Gabon said on the social networking site X, formerly Twitter, that given the current events in Gabon, it is recommended to stay at home.
Earlier, senior officers in the Gabon army announced their control of power in the country, canceling the results of the presidential elections, and dissolving the constitution, following the announcement of Bongo's win.
