The French military suffered a second fatality during an anti-terrorism training mission in Kurdistan region, north Iraq, the Ministry of Peshmerga Affairs of Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) said in a statement on Monday.
Warrant Officer Nicolas Latourte, who joined the mission of the global coalition against the so-called Islamic State (IS or Daesh) in last May, succumbed to a wound he sustained yesterday; he was training the KRG Peshmerga forces on how to defuse explosive devices.
Latourte was airlifted to a military hospital in Erbil city, capital of the region, where he was confirmed dead, according to the statement.
The Ministry appreciated the contributions of the French forces to the combat against terrorism, expressing condolences to the French government and people and Latourte's family.
On Friday, August 18, French President Emmanuel Macron confirmedd that Sergeant Baptiste Gauchot was killed in a road accident in Iraq during a similar training mission.
