German Chancellor: “We do not seek regime change in Russia”

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz Thursday said recent events in Russia are an internal matter for the country and has nothing to do with other countries.

"Our aim is not regime change in Russia. Our aim is to pursue an independent Ukraine," he told reporters ahead of an EU summit in Brussels.

Scholz, who was the first EU leader to arrive at the summit venue, said EU leaders would discuss developments in Russia after the Wagner mercenaries aborted their march on Moscow.

"This shows once again that it is simply irresponsible to place military force in private hands," he stressed, noting that Russia's reliance on such a force was a threat to Russia and for numerous other countries where Wagner is deployed.

"What the Wagner mercenaries have done in the Ukraine war, what they are doing in Africa and many other places in the world, is irresponsible and unforgivable. There are many crimes involved," said Scholz.
