Germany: Germany has announced that its current gas reserves are sufficient to meet the nation's needs during the winter, alleviating worries about low storage levels and ruling out the necessity for expensive government intervention to purchase gas, opting instead to rely on market mechanisms.
According to Emirates News Agency, the German Press Agency (dpa) reported that Klaus Mller, President of the Federal Network Agency, stated that more than 136 terawatt-hours (TWh) of gas are currently stored, with facilities more than 55 percent full. This exceeds the nearly 134 TWh withdrawn from storage throughout the previous winter season, and there is still time for further injections over the coming weeks.
Responding to concerns from the Association of Gas Storage Operators (INES) about lower storage levels compared to previous years, Mller mentioned that such comparisons are no longer entirely accurate. Germany now has liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals operating at around 45 percent capacity, in addition to pipeline supplies from Norway, allowing for rapid importation of additional volumes if needed.
Mller emphasized that the responsibility for filling storage facilities rests with traders, who are required to fulfill their supply obligations to municipal utilities and industrial companies. He noted that traders can secure supplies through pipeline deliveries, LNG imports, or withdrawals from storage, reiterating that costly government intervention is not necessary at this time.
