BERLIN: The global population has reached approximately 8.156 billion in 2024, marking an increase of around 82 million people from last year's figure of 8.083 billion, as estimated by the German Foundation for World Population.
According to Emirates News Agency, the global population surpassed the 8 billion mark in November 2022. The United Nations projects that the world population will exceed 9 billion by 2037, with the possibility of reaching 10 billion in the latter half of the century.
The foundation highlighted that although the global population continues to grow, the rate of increase has slowed significantly, with the current global fertility rate averaging 2.2 children per woman. This slowdown in growth is attributed to various factors, including increased access to education and healthcare, particularly in developing regions.
Despite the overall deceleration in growth, population expansion remains particularly rapid in Africa, where the population is expected to double over the next two decades. This rapid growth poses challenges in terms of resource allocation, infrastructure development, and economic planning for many African nations.
The data underscores the need for global and regional strategies to manage population growth sustainably, ensuring that resources and opportunities are equitably distributed to foster stability and prosperity.
