New york: UN Secretary-General Ant³nio Guterres has urged world leaders to "get serious - and deliver" as they gather in New York for the high-level week of the 80th General Assembly. During a press conference at the UN Headquarters, Guterres emphasized the fragility of international cooperation amid global divisions and crises.
According to Emirates News Agency, Guterres described the current global situation as a world adrift in "turbulent, uncharted waters." He highlighted several pressing challenges such as widening geopolitical divides, escalating conflicts, climate change, rapid technological advancements, and rising inequalities that require immediate action.
Guterres compared the General Assembly to the "World Cup of diplomacy," stating that it should not be about scoring points but solving problems, as there is too much at stake. He stressed that international cooperation is under unprecedented pressure, demanding a unified response from global leaders.
Nearly 150 heads of state and government are expected in New York, accompanied by thousands of officials and diplomats. Guterres announced plans to hold over 150 bilateral meetings, aiming to encourage leaders to engage directly, bridge divides, reduce risks, and find solutions.
