Hamdan Bin Zayed Enacts Sustainable Fisheries Policy in Abu Dhabi

Abu dhabi: H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler’s Representative in Al Dhafra Region and Chairman of the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD), has issued Decree No. (8) of 2025 to establish a policy on Sustainable Fisheries in Abu Dhabi. This initiative underscores the emirate’s commitment to conserving marine resources and promoting the sustainability of the fishing industry, given the positive signs of fish stock recovery following EAD’s recent regulatory efforts.

According to Emirates News Agency, the decree mandates that EAD, in collaboration with relevant entities, will oversee the implementation of the policy within the specified timeframe. The agency is tasked with analyzing the impacts of the policy’s execution using structured procedures that support the achievement of its goals. This aligns with Abu Dhabi’s dedication to sustainable natural resource management and the resilience of marine ecosystems amidst environmental challenges.

The policy aims to ensure the longevity and resilience of fisheries resources, enhancing their environmental, social, and economic value. It seeks to foster governance, scientific research, and innovation for effective fisheries management, while protecting native species from overfishing. The policy also focuses on developing community capacity for sustainable practices and forming partnerships between government agencies, the private sector, and local communities to ensure the rational use of marine resources.

Key components of the policy include managing fisheries through scientific principles, enhancing monitoring and research programs to evaluate fish stocks and marine habitats, and developing legislation related to fishing activities. It also supports sustainable aquaculture initiatives and the rehabilitation of natural habitats like coral reefs and mangroves. Emphasis is placed on empowering local fishermen and promoting awareness about conserving marine resources through sustainable fishing methods.

The policy provides a comprehensive framework for managing the fishing sector, integral to Emirati cultural heritage and a vital source for food security and economic growth. Responsible fisheries management contributes to maintaining healthy marine food chains, supporting biodiversity, and assisting in carbon sequestration, thereby enhancing its environmental and economic role in achieving Abu Dhabi’s sustainable development goals.
