Hanwha and EDGE Partner to Enhance Defence Capabilities

Abu dhabi: EDGE, one of the world's leading advanced technology and defence groups, and Hanwha Aerospace, a prominent company from the Republic of Korea specializing in space, aviation, and defence, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore strategic defence cooperation. This partnership aims to explore advancements in air and missile defence, long-range precision strike, unmanned systems, and defence AI.

According to Emirates News Agency, the agreement between Hanwha and EDGE focuses on leveraging Hanwha's technology portfolio along with EDGE's growing industrial ecosystem. The discussions involve advanced air-defence technologies that could facilitate integrated, multi-layered defence architectures tailored to the UAE's future needs. The MoU also considers potential models for localized sustainment, production, and training, including options for establishing dedicated MRO (Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul) capacity in the UAE.

Both companies will evaluate opportunities in the realm of defence AI, examining how real-world operational data and Hanwha's AI modelling expertise can be utilized for future capability development. Additionally, the partnership will explore concepts in unmanned ground systems (UGV) and identify potential cooperation areas in shipbuilding and maritime MRO, focusing on technologies that support vessel design, maintenance, and lifecycle sustainment.

Khaled Al Zaabi, President - Platforms and Systems at EDGE, emphasized the significance of this understanding, stating that it reflects a shared ambition to advance the next generation of defence capabilities. He highlighted Hanwha's strengths across key domains and EDGE's expanding industrial base as factors creating momentum for systems that enhance national resilience and expand the UAE's role as a leader in advanced technology.

Sung Il, President of Hanwha Middle East and Africa, expressed optimism about the collaboration, noting that the MoU opens a pathway for meaningful dialogue and cooperation with EDGE in areas vital to both countries. He anticipates evaluating opportunities that could bolster the UAE's defence resilience and generate long-term industrial value.
