House of Wisdom Highlights Arab Maritime Heritage at Sharjah International Book Fair 2026

Sharjah:House of Wisdom is showcasing Arab maritime navigation and the legacy of Ahmad ibn Majid at the 45th Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF) until November 15. This unique exhibition, in collaboration with the Oman Across Ages Museum, highlights the navigation skills and trade routes developed by generations of Arab seafarers, emphasizing the historical maritime ties between the UAE and Oman.

According to Wam, the exhibition, titled 'Legacy of Arab Navigation Ahmad ibn Majid and the Science of Seafaring', marks Oman's participation as Guest of Honour at this year's book fair. The Oman Across Ages Museum, inaugurated by His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik in March 2023, is a key cultural partner in this endeavor.

The collaboration features Al-Rahmaniyyat, writings by Arab sea captains about their navigation experiences, and manuscripts related to Ahmad ibn Majid, a notable 15th-century Arab navigator and scholar. Marwa Al Aqroubi, Executive Director of House of Wisdom, emphasized the scientific and civilizational contributions of Arab navigation, which have been passed down through generations, enhancing trade and cultural connections.

Visitors to the SIBF stand can view three maritime manuscripts from the Oman Across Ages Museum, which provide insights into Al-Rahmaniyyat. These include 'The Treasure of Secrets in the Science of the Seas' by Nasser bin Ali Al Khadhouri, inscribed on UNESCO's Memory of the World Register, and works by other prominent Omani sea captains.

Additionally, the display includes 'The Poems and Epistles of Ibn Majid', a 1771 CE manuscript of nautical poems, and 'A Collection of Treatises on Marine Science', featuring Ibn Majid's writings and maps. A book by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi is also presented, refuting claims about Ibn Majid's involvement with the Portuguese.

The exhibition offers a video on Ibn Majid's life and his contributions to navigational knowledge. Young visitors can participate in activities inspired by Omani heritage and maritime discovery. The 12-day fair, organized by the Sharjah Book Authority, hosts 3,212 publishers from 126 countries at Expo Centre Sharjah.
