ICBA Launches Initiative for Emirati Women in Agricultural Research

Abu Dhabi:The International Center for Biosaline Agriculture (ICBA) has unveiled a new initiative to establish the 'ICBA Research Chair for Sustainable and Resilient Agriculture.' This program will offer an exceptional Emirati woman researcher the chance to lead comprehensive research efforts over a two-year period.

According to Emirates News Agency, the initiative is designed to develop solutions that align with the United Arab Emirates' priorities in sustainable agricultural production and natural resource management. It also aims to bolster Emirati women's leadership in scientific research and innovation, aligning with the objectives of Emirati Women's Day to recognize their contributions and enhance their role in development.

ICBA plans to open applications for the inaugural cycle in January 2027. Details regarding eligibility requirements, selection criteria, and application procedures will be announced in due course. The research chair will focus on tackling agricultural challenges in the UAE and other arid, water-scarce regions. Key research areas include soil and land management, water resources, salinity, resilient crops, production systems, and emerging agricultural technologies.

Dr. Tarifa Alzaabi, Director-General of ICBA, emphasized the support from UAE's leadership in creating opportunities for Emirati women in scientific research and innovation. She noted the importance of addressing national priorities and enhancing their presence in the global scientific community.

Dr. Alzaabi also highlighted the necessity for investment in research and innovation, given the intertwined nature of climate, environmental, economic, and geopolitical challenges. This research chair aims to leverage over 25 years of ICBA's experience, offering a robust research environment for an Emirati woman researcher to lead high-quality research and apply knowledge and innovation effectively.

The initiative will provide opportunities for scientific mentorship, knowledge exchange, and interdisciplinary collaboration, connecting research with the agricultural sector's needs and practical applications. It also aims to inspire the next generation of Emirati women researchers to contribute to sustainable agricultural solutions.
