INTERPOL and WHO Forge Alliance to Combat Global Health Threats

Accra:INTERPOL and the World Health Organisation (WHO) have formalized a cooperation agreement to address significant threats at the intersection of public health and security. This partnership aims to merge INTERPOL's law enforcement experience with WHO's public health leadership to prevent, detect, and respond to global risks.

According to Emirates News Agency, this agreement will enhance collaboration in exceptional situations, such as the misuse of chemical or radioactive materials and unusual biological events, whether naturally occurring, accidental, or deliberate. The collaboration will also focus on coordinating efforts for major international events, aiding countries in preparing for and responding to potential health threats.

INTERPOL Secretary General Valdecy Urquiza emphasized the increasing interconnection between crime and health, noting that criminal networks exploit vulnerabilities, risking lives through actions like distributing falsified medical products. WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus highlighted that strengthening collaboration with INTERPOL supports their collective ability to prevent harm and protect public trust.

Additionally, the agreement targets tackling human trafficking for organ removal and the illegal trade of human organs, tissues, and cells. It also addresses the threat posed by the illicit production and trade of goods impacting public health and supports the implementation of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. Through these joint efforts, INTERPOL and WHO aim to assist countries in identifying threats, protecting consumers, and reinforcing international safety frameworks.
