IPU Assembly in Tanzania Focuses on Parliamentary and Sustainable Development Priorities

Abu Dhabi:Mira Sultan Al Suwaidi, Vice Chairman of the Federal National Council Group in the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), chaired a joint meeting involving geopolitical group leaders, standing committees, and specialized IPU bodies, representing IPU President Dr. Tulia Ackson.

According to Emirates News Agency, the meeting was part of the 153rd IPU Assembly and related events hosted by the National Assembly of the United Republic of Tanzania from October 5th to 9th, 2026.

Al Suwaidi emphasized the significance of the consultative platform for anticipating emerging issues, enhancing coordination among IPU bodies, and implementing its new strategy. She outlined priorities aimed at increasing the effectiveness of international parliamentary action and promoting the involvement of women and young people in diverse areas.

Human rights were underscored as a key focus for the IPU in 2026. Al Suwaidi reviewed initiatives related to disability-inclusive parliaments, parliamentarians' rights, artificial intelligence, and the right to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment.

In her role as President of the IPU Standing Committee on Sustainable Development, Al Suwaidi also highlighted the Committee's priorities, which include climate action, environmental sustainability, inclusive sustainable development, socioeconomic transformation, and the use of technology, artificial intelligence, and innovation for sustainable development.
