Abu dhabi: A magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck off the coast of southern Mexico, setting off a tsunami warning for segments of the Pacific region.
According to Emirates News Agency, the earthquake did not result in any fatalities or significant damage in Mexico or Guatemala, although it was felt as far as El Salvador. The US Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the earthquake's epicenter was located 30 miles southwest of Aquiles Serdan, near Chiapas, at a depth of 9 miles. It occurred after a smaller quake whose epicenter was farther out in the ocean.
USGS recorded at least 10 aftershocks ranging between magnitudes 4.9 and 6. Mexico's navy secretary, Admiral Raymundo Morales, stated at a press conference that while there was "no serious impact," people were advised to avoid beaches as a precaution.
The US Tsunami Warning System had initially issued a warning for "hazardous tsunami waves" along the coastlines of Mexico and Guatemala. It later observed waves reaching 0.3 meters (1.1 feet) above tide level in Puerto Madero and Chiapas. Governor Salom³n Jara Cruz of Oaxaca, a southern Mexican state, mentioned that the quake was felt with "moderate intensity," but no significant damage was reported.
