Rome: Experts, officials, and diplomats from the UAE and Italy have underscored that the Middle East crisis has entered a new phase that extends beyond the region, evolving into a multidimensional global challenge impacting international security, the global economy, energy security, supply chains, and cyber security. According to Emirates News Agency, these conclusions were drawn during a high-level dialogue session organized by TRENDS Global, part of TRENDS Group, via its Virtual Office in Italy, in cooperation with the Embassy of the United Arab Emirates in Rome and the Italian Centre for International Studies (CeSI). The event, titled "The Crisis in the Middle East: Perspectives from the United Arab Emirates and Italy," brought together diplomats, researchers, and experts to discuss the crisis's geopolitical and economic implications and explore mechanisms for enhancing Gulf security and coordinated diplomacy. Abdulla Ali AlSubousi, UAE Ambassador to Italy, highlighted the importance of UAE-Italy relati ons in scientific research and dialogue on regional and international challenges. He praised TRENDS Group and CeSI's efforts in organizing the conference and emphasized Italy's role as a key partner in advancing dialogue on Middle East affairs, given its historic position as a bridge between Europe and the Mediterranean. The Ambassador also reviewed the UAE's management of recent regional challenges, noting the efficiency of the country's institutions and their ability to respond effectively to crises. He mentioned that the UAE Armed Forces intercepted more than 97 percent of missiles and drones during hostile Iranian attacks, reflecting the readiness of the national defense system and effective planning. Further, he noted the UAE's diversified economy, where the non-oil sector accounts for about 75 percent of GDP, and its sovereign wealth funds are valued at approximately US$2.49 trillion. With foreign reserves surpassing AED1 trillion, a strong sovereign credit rating, and continued investments in future- oriented sectors, the UAE is positioned as a model of stability and confidence. Dr. Mohammed Abdullah Al-Ali, CEO of TRENDS Group, stated that the Middle East crisis now affects global sectors such as the economy, energy security, and cyber security, necessitating enhanced international cooperation. He noted the UAE's focus on diplomacy, de-escalation, and building resilient national systems, emphasizing the importance of preparedness, innovation, and international partnerships. Dr. Al-Ali highlighted UAE-Italy's strategic partnership, which extends to scientific research, strategic studies, and cyber security, contributing to knowledge production and comprehensive approaches to challenges. He expressed hope that the conference would foster research cooperation and generate recommendations for peace and stability. Fabrizio Lobasso from the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs addressed the economic repercussions of the Middle East crisis on European and global economies, stressing that economic diplomacy is crucial for crisis management. Meanwhile, Sarah Al Neyadi from TRENDS Group analyzed the conflict's impact on regional security, advocating for broader security approaches encompassing economic, food, and cyber dimensions. Marco Di Liddo from CeSI emphasized the fragility of the current ceasefire and the link between European and Middle Eastern security, highlighting the strategic importance of maritime route protection. Khaled Al Jarman of the UAE Embassy in Rome noted the resilience of UAE-Italy bilateral relations during the crisis and outlined future cooperation in sectors such as artificial intelligence and clean energy. Dr. Luigi Martino from Khalifa University discussed the cyber dimension of modern conflict, noting the importance of UAE-Italy collaboration in enhancing resilience against cyber threats. Andrea Margelletti from CeSI concluded by emphasizing the need for stronger cooperation between think tanks and decision-makers to address complex crises. The session ended with a call for sustained strategic dialogue, stronger research partnerships, and intensified international cooperation to build a more resilient global framework promoting security and sustainable development.
