Mohammed Bin Rashid Library Inaugurates ‘Circles of Light’ Exhibition Celebrating Arabic Calligraphy

Dubai: The Mohammed Bin Rashid Library has inaugurated "Circles of Light," an exhibition that focuses on contemporary Arabic calligraphy. The exhibition showcases nearly 26 works by the renowned artist and calligrapher Tagalsir Hassan, who is known for his contributions to Arabic calligraphy. The exhibition will be open to the public until 30th September at the Al Khor Exhibition.

According to Emirates News Agency, Mohammad Ahmad Al Murr, Chairman of the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Library Foundation, emphasized the exhibition's role in highlighting the significance of Arabic calligraphy in Arab and Islamic cultural heritage. He noted that the initiative aims to provide platforms that celebrate creativity, foster cross-cultural dialogue, and encourage artists and calligraphers to delve into the beauty and identity of this art form.

The exhibition features a visual exploration through innovative circular compositions and geometric forms, including squares, triangles, and open arrangements. Hassan's artwork reflects a command of classical scripts such as Thuluth Jali, Diwani Jali, Naskh, Kufic, and Muhaqqaq, while also presenting contemporary reinterpretations that introduce new elements into traditional forms. The pieces utilize Japanese sumi ink, 23-carat gold, acrylics, and mixed media to create impactful visual experiences.

The collection includes works with spiritual and humanistic themes, featuring Qur'anic verses like Ayat al-Kursi and Surah Al-Ikhlas, Hadith-inspired pieces, and universal messages. Some artworks also pay homage to the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, highlighting themes of human values and the role of women in society.

Hassan's works are showcased in two main styles: traditional calligraphy on handmade, acid-free paper with Japanese sumi ink and 23-carat gold, and contemporary acrylic compositions on canvas, using acrylics and mixed media to create texture and depth.

"Circles of Light" embodies Hassan's philosophy of blending heritage with innovation, presenting a dynamic expression of Arabic calligraphy. The exhibition highlights the Mohammed Bin Rashid Library's commitment to preserving Arabic literature, promoting the Arabic language, supporting writers and researchers, and encouraging cultural exchange regionally and internationally.
