Cape town: The Muslim Council of Elders is actively co-organising the G20 Interfaith Forum (IF20), taking place in Cape Town, South Africa, from 10th to 14th August 2025. The event is held under the theme "Ubuntu in Action: Focusing on Marginalised Communities."
According to Emirates News Agency, the Forum brings together a coalition of global voices aimed at shaping inclusive and ethical policies. It gathers religious leaders, civil society organizations, government officials, multilateral institutions, and scholars to explore collaborative solutions to urgent global issues.
In its opening address at the Forum, the Muslim Council of Elders highlighted the crucial role religious leaders can play in addressing global challenges, such as conflicts and disputes. The Council advocated for a nuanced understanding of relationship dynamics, addressing both violence and peace.
Judge Mohamed Abdelsalam, whose speech was delivered by Adama Dieng, a former United Nations Under-Secretary-General and advisor to the Council, stressed the need for justice for the planet. He particularly emphasized the suffering of the Palestinian people and the widespread wars and conflicts that have resulted in significant loss of life and displacement. He noted that these crises represent a test of shared humanity.
He further elaborated that under the leadership of His Eminence Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, the Muslim Council of Elders is leading efforts to promote peace, social cohesion, and ethical leadership. These initiatives are based on a value-driven, practical approach, emphasizing faith's role in addressing global challenges, fostering interfaith dialogue, empowering youth, and promoting tolerance, coexistence, and human fraternity.
Judge Abdelsalam also highlighted the Council's initiatives to strengthen its presence and impact in Africa. These efforts include innovative peacebuilding initiatives, empowering local religious actors, and expanding partnerships with regional institutions. The Council's efforts align with the G20 Interfaith Forum's focus on addressing Africa's unique challenges and opportunities.
The Council expressed its support for the G20 Interfaith Forum's call to "leave no one behind," especially in areas like food security, migration, and the economic and spiritual dimensions of justice. It urged religious leaders to collectively advocate for a return to values of justice and peace, aiming to halt wars and conflicts for a brighter future for humanity.
