Abu Dhabi: Phil Murphy, Governor of New Jersey, expressed optimism about the growing relationship between New Jersey and the United Arab Emirates, citing significant opportunities for collaboration in various sectors. During his visit to the UAE, Governor Murphy emphasized the potential for strengthening ties, particularly in innovation-driven fields. According to Emirates News Agency, Governor Murphy highlighted the UAE's innovative approach as a key reason for New Jersey's interest in forming partnerships. Areas such as generative artificial intelligence, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, food, infrastructure, energy, and sports were identified as promising sectors for collaboration. The Governor's visit, part of a broader Gulf tour including Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, underscores the economic mission aimed at enhancing mutual understanding and expanding investment and research cooperation. Among the anticipated outcomes of the visit is an announcement by UAE-based Hotpack, which plans to invest $100 million in a new manufacturing facility in Edison, New Jersey. Set to begin operations in June 2025, this facility will be Hotpack's first production base in North America, creating 200 new jobs over five years. Governor Murphy also highlighted significant Emirati investments in New Jersey, including a recent investment by Abu Dhabi's ADQ into Energy Capital Partners, a private equity firm in Summit, New Jersey. This investment reflects the expanding economic ties between the regions. In the education sector, the economic mission includes several memoranda of understanding (MoUs) between New Jersey universities and UAE counterparts. Kean University will collaborate with the University of Dubai, the American University in Dubai, and the University of Wollongong in Dubai on faculty and student exchanges, joint research, and academic programs. Rowan University will partner with Ras Al Khaimah University to focus on research and development and strengthen cultural ties. Governor Murphy emphasized New Jersey's strong p ublic education system and world-class institutions, inviting UAE universities to join strategic innovation hubs which foster collaboration between academia and the private sector. He noted the potential for new partnerships arising from direct dialogue during his visit. In response to inquiries about sectors benefiting from UAE investments, Governor Murphy identified pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, advanced technologies, generative AI, infrastructure, and sports and entertainment as key areas. He described New Jersey as a hub of innovation with a robust infrastructure program. On trade policy, Murphy expressed support for local manufacturing while maintaining strong international partnerships, highlighting New Jersey's efforts to attract international investment through incentive packages.
