Abu Dhabi: Nine people were killed and others injured when a driver ploughed a car into a crowd at a street festival in the Canadian city of Vancouver, local police have said. Police reported that a 30-year-old man who was driving a black SUV was arrested.
According to Emirates News Agency, the incident happened shortly after 8pm, as members of the city's Filipino community gathered to celebrate Lapu Lapu Day festival. The event, meant to be a joyous occasion, turned tragic with the unexpected accident.
The Vancouver mayor, Ken Sim, expressed his condolences, stating, "Our thoughts are with all those affected and with Vancouver's Filipino community during this incredibly difficult time." The community is now coming together to support the victims and their families as investigations continue into the cause of the accident.
