Omar Sultan Al Olama Participates in UN Global Dialogue on AI Governance on Behalf of UAE President

Geneva: On behalf of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Omar Sultan Al Olama, Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, participated in the United Nations Global Dialogue on Artificial Intelligence Governance, held in Geneva, Switzerland. The event aimed to advance the global discourse on AI governance and strengthen international cooperation in this field. According to Emirates News Agency, Omar Sultan Al Olama conveyed the greetings of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to the participating leaders and emphasized the UAE's dedication to collaborating with the international community to promote responsible artificial intelligence. The dialogue was organized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in partnership with over 50 United Nations partners and the Government of Switzerland. It represents the first UN platform of its kind to bring Member States together to shape a comprehensive global conversation on the future of artificial intelligence. During his address, Omar Sultan Al Olama highlighted that the UAE's progress in artificial intelligence is driven by its leadership's vision, establishing a national model where governance evolves alongside technological innovation. He noted that AI is transforming decision-making, service delivery, and future development in governments. Al Olama also mentioned that the UAE is the first country to commit to integrating Agentic AI across 50% of government operations within the next two years and has launched the world's first AI-powered Regulatory Intelligence Ecosystem. Al Olama urged the international community to adopt a new approach to AI governance, focusing on the impact and outcomes of AI technology rather than just regulation. He advocated for building integrated ecosystems that unite governments, critical sectors, and society to ensure AI delivers sustainable value. The dialogue brought together government leaders and international organizations, including António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations; Annalena Baerbock, President of the United Nations General Assembly; Doreen Bogdan-Martin, Secretary-General of the ITU; and Khaled El-Enany, Director-General of UNESCO, among others. It was co-chaired by Ambassador Egriselda López and Ambassador Rein Tammsaar. On the sidelines, Omar Sultan Al Olama met with António Guterres, reaffirming the UAE's support for the UN's efforts to establish a global framework for AI cooperation. He emphasized the significance of using AI to promote sustainable development, enhance quality of life, and strengthen the global AI ecosystem through international dialogue and multilateral cooperation. This dialogue marks the inaugural session of the United Nations Global Dialogue on Artificial Intelligence Governance, with a second session scheduled at the United Nations Headquarters in New York in 2027. It is part of the UN's broader initiatives to align international AI governance efforts and strengthen coordination among them. The Independent International Scient ific Panel on Artificial Intelligence is expected to present its first report during the dialogue.
