Abu dhabi: A passenger bus veered off a road and plunged into a precipice in a mountainous region in Sri Lanka, killing 15 people and injuring 16 others, a police spokesman said Friday. The tragic incident unfolded near the town of Wellawaya, approximately 280 kilometers east of the capital Colombo, on Thursday night, as the bus fell into a roughly 1,000-foot precipice.
According to Emirates News Agency, the accident resulted in the deaths of 15 individuals and left 16 others injured, including five children. Police spokesman Fredrick Wootler shared that an initial police investigation revealed the driver was traveling at high speed. The driver lost control of the bus, leading it to crash with another vehicle and into guardrails before it ultimately toppled off the cliff.
