Registration Opens for Q1 2026 Clean Energy Certificates Auction

Abu dhabi: Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) announced the opening of registration for its Q1 2026 Clean Energy Certificates (CECs) auction, set to close on January 9, 2026. The auction aims to support the growing demand for renewable and clean energy verification in Abu Dhabi.

According to Emirates News Agency, the Q1 auction is part of a trend of increasing participation across Abu Dhabi's economy. Businesses, organizations, and individuals are utilizing CECs, which are issued by the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy, to ensure their electricity consumption comes from renewable or clean sources.

CECs serve as Abu Dhabi's only accredited tool for claiming renewable and clean energy use. They help entities make progress in reducing Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions while demonstrating climate leadership in line with national goals.

In 2025, CEC auctions saw significant interest from sectors such as healthcare, industrial, retail, real estate, events, and commercial industries. The sales of CECs reached notable levels, reflecting a shift towards verified renewable and clean energy usage.

Eng. Mohamed Almarzooqi, Chief Asset Development and Management Officer of EWEC, stated that the growth in CEC usage illustrates how organizations in Abu Dhabi are turning decarbonization plans into tangible outcomes.

CECs offer a transparent, internationally recognized pathway to adopting renewable and clean energy. They enable companies and institutions to credibly track progress towards sustainability goals, reduce Scope 2 emissions, and align with the UAE Net Zero By 2050 Strategic Initiative.

CECs are the sole accredited instrument in Abu Dhabi for verifying the environmental and economic benefits of clean energy consumption. Issued in units of 1 megawatt-hour (MWh), they adhere to the International Renewable Energy Certificate Standard (I-REC Standard).

EWEC serves as the scheme's Single Registrant and Auction Operator.
