Dubai: Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has awarded two significant contracts for the Al Meydan Street Development Project, a strategic initiative aimed at enhancing the emirate's main road network, with a total investment of AED 1.161 billion. The project is a key component of RTA's plan to improve traffic flow and support urban growth across Dubai.
According to Emirates News Agency, the project has been divided into two contracts to expedite completion and maximize the benefits for traffic and development. It involves the construction of 3,700 meters of bridges and 17 kilometers of roads, including cycling tracks that will integrate with the existing network. The development will cater to over 500,000 residents in various areas and is expected to be completed by the end of 2028.
Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA, emphasized the project's alignment with Dubai's vision for infrastructure development. He noted that the project is part of a broader strategy to create an integrated and efficient road network that meets the demands of urban, population, and economic growth, supporting the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan and Dubai Economic Agenda D33.
Al Meydan Street serves as a crucial corridor supporting Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Al Khail Road. The project aims to enhance connectivity, provide alternative routes, improve traffic distribution, and increase mobility efficiency between key areas. It is designed to raise the capacity of north-south traffic corridors by 18% and reduce travel time from Al Manama Street and Dubai-Al Ain Road to Umm Suqeim Street by 66%.
The first contract encompasses the development of Al Meydan Street from its intersection with Latifa bint Hamdan Street to Umm Suqeim Street, as well as Al Marabea' Street development from Dubai Hills to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road. It includes a grade-separated interchange with a capacity for 14,400 vehicles per hour and a direct connection between Al Marabea' Street and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road.
The second contract covers the development of Al Meydan Street from First Al Khail Street to Muscat Street, with improvements to intersections and the construction of new surface roads. It also includes a cycling network and underpasses to support sustainable mobility.
The Al Meydan Street Development Project complements the Latifa bint Hamdan Street Development Project, forming an interconnected network that links several of Dubai's arterial roads. Together, these projects will enhance traffic flow, strengthen connectivity, and accommodate anticipated traffic growth, supporting urban development in areas such as Dubai Hills, Nad Al Sheba, and Mohammed Bin Rashid Gardens.
RTA's strategic initiatives, including the ongoing Latifa bint Hamdan Street Development Project, aim to create a new corridor linking Sheikh Zayed Road to Emirates Road, with a capacity of 16,000 vehicles per hour. This project is expected to significantly reduce travel times and further improve the efficiency of Dubai's road network.
