RTA Completes 70% of Umm Suqeim Street Improvement Project

Dubai: Mattar Al Tayer, Director General, Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), announced the completion of 70% of the Umm Suqeim Street Improvement Project, extending from the intersection with Al Khail Road to the intersection with Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road. The project is part of a master development plan for the Umm Suqeim-Al Qudra corridor, which spans 16 km and serves residential and development areas with over one million residents.

According to Emirates News Agency, Al Tayer made these remarks during a site tour to inspect project progress, aligning with leadership's directives to enhance road infrastructure, support urban expansion, and improve traffic flow across Dubai. The completed phases cover 4.6 km, including the development of the Umm Suqeim-Al Barsha South intersection and an 800-metre tunnel along Umm Suqeim Street.

The project is designed to increase the corridor's capacity to 16,000 vehicles per hour in both directions and reduce travel time between Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road and Al Khail Road by 61%. It enhances connectivity between major arterial roads, benefiting zones like Al Barsha South, Dubai Hills, Arjan, and Dubai Science Park.

Al Tayer was also briefed on RTA's use of smart technologies, like drones and artificial intelligence, for monitoring road projects. This approach has improved operational efficiency, accelerated decision-making, and provided real-time data. The adoption of these technologies has doubled field presence and reduced site survey time by 60%.

In 2013, RTA completed Phase I of the project, covering the section between Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road, including two bridges and pedestrian crossings. In 2020, a main bridge along Umm Suqeim Street was opened, further enhancing capacity and connectivity in the area.
