Sharjah: Sharjah Maritime Academy (SMA) and Heriot-Watt University have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance academic collaboration, research development, and professional training between the two institutions. The MoU was formalized at the Sharjah Maritime Academy campus in Khorfakkan by Dr. Hashim Al Zaabi, Chancellor of SMA, and Professor Dame Heather McGregor, Provost and Vice Principal of Heriot-Watt University Dubai. The signing ceremony was attended by senior officials from both entities.
According to Emirates News Agency, the agreement lays out a framework for cooperation in areas such as faculty development, research supervision, teaching exchange, and joint academic ventures. This initiative aligns with the UAE’s vision to improve innovation, the quality of education, and sustainable industry partnerships. The partnership will see Heriot-Watt University faculty conducting staff development sessions at Sharjah Maritime Academy, as both parties explore opportunities for joint research, project co-supervision, and teaching collaboration.
Dr. Al Zaabi expressed that the MoU signifies SMA’s dedication to forging international academic partnerships aimed at enhancing learning outcomes and applied research in the maritime sector. This initiative is designed to prepare future professionals to contribute to the UAE and the broader region.
Professor McGregor highlighted that the collaboration unites the strengths of both institutions to foster research exchange, faculty collaboration, and professional development, in line with the UAE’s vision for sustainable, knowledge-based growth.
