Sharjah: His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, has enacted a new law to regulate the University of the Art Sharjah (UAS).
According to Emirates News Agency, the decree establishes UAS as a non-profit Arab academic institution with legal personality and the necessary legal capacity to achieve its objectives. The university will function with financial and administrative independence and is owned by the government. The primary campus will reside in Sharjah City, with potential for additional branches as decreed by the university president.
The law mandates that UAS will be led by a president appointed through an Emiri decree, who will also preside over the board. The president holds the authority to delegate powers within the board to other members. The university's objectives focus on creating an educational environment that nurtures creativity, prepares graduates for the creative industries, and enhances students' artistic and intellectual capabilities. Further goals include fostering balanced growth in students, preparing them for cultural and creative industry contributions, and building relationships with local and international institutions.
To achieve these objectives, the university is empowered to develop academic policies and programs, secure necessary national approvals, and form international partnerships. UAS will also offer professional and training programs, conduct research, and engage in community service through partnerships with various sectors. The managing entities include the Board of Trustees, the University President, and the Directors of the Academies, each with specific roles defined by the law and its regulations.
The university is authorized to award degrees and conduct instruction in Arabic and English, with the option for other languages as required by specific programs. The decree encompasses various legal aspects, including financial resources, budgetary provisions, and implementation regulations.
