Abu Dhabi:Space42, in collaboration with Viasat, is set to advance global satellite connectivity through the launch of the Equatys platform. This initiative aims to establish an integrated global satellite communications ecosystem, enhancing the UAE's role as a pivotal partner in developing next-generation connectivity infrastructure.
According to Wam, Ali Al Hashemi, CEO of Space Services at Space42, emphasized that Equatys introduces a shared satellite infrastructure model based on open technical standards. This model integrates capabilities and expertise to provide efficient direct-to-device satellite connectivity, extending coverage to remote areas and communities underserved by traditional networks.
The Equatys platform is being developed under a binding agreement signed in September 2026 between Space42 and Viasat, with equity commitments of up to US$1 billion. The partnership marks a shift towards shared infrastructure, supporting global expansion while reducing costs. Additionally, a memorandum of understanding with Canada's Terrestar Solutions explores interoperability between Terrestar's planned CaStar constellation and Equatys.
A unique feature of Equatys is its "sovereign shell" model, which allows national operators to retain control of their assets while leveraging shared infrastructure. This approach supports service expansion without compromising national sovereignty. The platform's adoption of open industry standards, like those from the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), aims to enhance interoperability and support competition and innovation.
Al Hashemi highlighted that the commercial introduction of Thuraya-4 in November 2025 marked a milestone in mobile satellite communications. Equatys extends these capabilities, focusing on creating an interconnected global ecosystem. Space42 views connectivity as a fundamental right, with plans to make satellite services more accessible worldwide, thereby strengthening the UAE's contribution to satellite communications development.
