Space42 to Begin Manufacturing High-Altitude Platform Prototypes in Abu Dhabi by H2/25

Abu Dhabi: Karim Sabbagh, Managing Director of Space42, has announced that the company's facility in Abu Dhabi will commence manufacturing the first prototypes of High-Altitude Platform Systems (HAPS) in the latter half of 2025. This strategic move sets the stage for proof-of-concept trials across three continents, carried out under international cooperation agreements.

According to Emirates News Agency, Sabbagh revealed during the 'Make it in the Emirates 2025' event that trials in African, Asian, and European markets are expected to begin soon. These trials are designed to validate the operational capabilities and feasibility of the HAPS concept.

Sabbagh emphasized Space42's proprietary ownership of the technology, highlighting how it provides the UAE with a sovereign advantage and strengthens its leadership in developing advanced communication and aerial surveillance solutions.

The HAPS technology involves unmanned aircraft tasked with carrying payloads for communications and Earth observation. The prototypes will be produced at Space42's newly opened Abu Dhabi facility, which is the first of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa region for high-altitude platform manufacturing.

Mira Aerospace, a subsidiary of Space42 and the High Altitude Platform Stations unit, has established MENA's first HAPS manufacturing center in Abu Dhabi. The facility, inaugurated on May 19, will boost Mira Aerospace's production capabilities, enhance research and development, support the commercialization of HAPS technology, and lay the groundwork for sustainable growth.

In related developments, Sabbagh discussed Space42's ongoing work on a non-terrestrial communications network, envisioned as the next generation of the "Thuraya" system. This network will use a constellation of satellites to provide global coverage, especially in areas lacking traditional terrestrial infrastructure. These initiatives are strategic investments aimed at expanding Space42's global presence and enhancing its product and service offerings from the UAE on an international scale.

Regarding the Foresight Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite constellation project for Earth observation, Sabbagh confirmed progress following the launch of the first two satellites. Manufacturing of the subsequent satellites is ongoing at Space42's facility in Sweihan, with strong support from the Abu Dhabi Investment Office, ensuring the complete deployment of the Foresight-3, -4, and -5 satellites.
